KRAM DEMANDS ANSWERS ON AIRPORT PRIVATIZATION PLAN
Regina-Wascana MP Michael Kram is calling on the federal government to provide details about its plan to bring private, foreign-owned, for-profit operators into Canada’s four largest airports and explain how much extra the traveling public can expect to pay.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced last week that he will seek private investors to take over the operations of airports in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. The federal government would retain ownership of the underlying land and assets.
The Liberals claim the change could raise tens of billions of dollars in revenues for the federal government.
“What the government hasn’t told us is how exactly will these new costs be passed on to the traveling public. How much extra will a ticket from Regina to Calgary or Toronto cost? $100? $200? $300?"
Kram also questioned how the federal government plans to spend the revenues from these one-time sales.
“The Prime Minister remains tight-lipped when it comes to how much of that money will actually remain in Canada’s aviation system,” said Kram. “If this is being presented as good news for regional airports, then Regina deserves to know what its share will be. Is it 10 per cent of the proceeds going to regional airports? 20 per cent? 50 per cent? So far, we have no answer.”
Kram also raised concerns about the longer-term implications for Regina International Airport.
“For more than three decades, Canada’s major airports have been operated by locally governed, not-for-profit airport authorities,” Kram said. “Before the government changes to a for-profit model, it needs to explain what safeguards will protect passengers, communities and regional airports.”
The Regina Airport Authority has successfully guided YQR through the enormous disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic and has worked to rebuild and expand Regina’s air connections. Recent successes include the addition of daily non-stop service to Denver and increased capacity on seasonal non-stop service to Mexico.
“Our local airport authority has done a tremendous job advocating for Regina, attracting new routes and improving connectivity, all while keeping operational costs at a minimum” Kram said. “Decisions about our airport need to continue reflecting the interests of the people and businesses who depend on it.”
Kram is calling on the government to disclose what exactly will be the effect on airfares, how much of the anticipated proceeds will be dedicated specifically to regional airports and whether it intends to extend the for-profit model beyond Canada’s four largest airports.
“Regina International Airport is critical infrastructure for southern Saskatchewan,” Kram said. “Regina deserves clear answers about its future before the federal government proceeds.”
