Kram to Help Lead Investigation into Rogers Outage
Michael Kram, Member of Parliament for Regina-Wascana, will be helping
to lead a federal investigation into last week's nation-wide Rogers Communications
outage.
"The Rogers outage showed just how vulnerable Canada has become in our
current telecommunications environment. All across the country, regular people
had their lives disrupted no matter whether they were Rogers customers or not.
Not only did cellphones and internet go down but debit networks went down,
making it difficult for people to do something as simple as buying groceries. This is
an unacceptable state of affairs for our country," Kram said.
Kram and the three other Conservative MPs on the House of Commons
Standing Committee on Industry and Technology sent a joint letter to Parliament
demanding an emergency meeting of the committee to investigate the outage. An
initial meeting to consider an investigation has been set for July 15.
Kram is currently the Vice-Chair of the committee.
In their joint letter, the Conservative members served notice that, in the
course of the investigation, they intend to call not only Rogers executives but also
officials from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission
(CRTC).
"Part of the outage falls at the feet of Rogers for their technical issues. But
another possibly larger part falls to the CRTC who have been responsible for
creating an uncompetitive, oligopolistic market in telecommunications. This has not.
only led to Canadians paying some of the highest prices in the world for cellular and
data but has also weakened our entire country by making our nation too dependent
on too small a number of telecom providers. We need to get this fixed."
