MP Kram Stands With WestJet Workers

 
Michael Kram, Member of Parliament for Regina-Wascana, today expressed his support for
WestJet flight attendants in their job action against the airline.“Conservatives stand with flight attendants and their right for a fair deal and good wages.


Conservatives know that flight attendants play a vital role in our transportation system and
deserve compensation that reflects the full scope of their responsibilities,” Kram said.


Kram noted that Conservatives have been trying to fix this problem for years.


“Conservatives called on the Liberal government years ago to amend the Canada Labour Code
to require that federally regulated airlines pay flight attendants for all hours they are on duty, not
just the time spent in air.”


In June of 2024, Lianne Rood, Conservative Member of Parliament for Lambton-Kent-
Middlesex, introduced her common-sense private member’s bill, the Fairness for Flight
Attendants Act, which would have granted fairness to flight attendants by requiring airlines to
pay them for the work they do before, during, and after a flight. Unfortunately, the bill never
became law due to the early election call.


“By neglecting this very reasonable amendment to the Canada Labour Code, the Liberals set
the stage for all of the cost, inconvenience and disrupted travel schedules that Canadians are
enduring today,” Kram said.


Kram noted his own personal interest in the cause.


“I previously served on the House of Commons Transport Committee, during which time I
consulted with many stakeholders on both the industry and labour side. I have maintained close
ties with and a keen interest in transportation issues ever since.”


Kram noted that several airlines in the United States and elsewhere in the world have instituted
fair pay policies and that WestJet needs to catch up with this global trend.


“The Carney government can resolve this dispute quickly and easily simply by doing the right
thing and enacting our legislation,” Kram said.
