Evraz on Front Line of Trade War: MP Kram
Michael Kram, MP for Regina-Wascana, today condemned the Trump administration’s
tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
“For many families in Regina, this fight just got personal.
The workers at Evraz North America, their families, the plant’s suppliers, and
their families, they are all now on the front lines of this trade war. First
with the 25 per cent tariffs, then with the short-lived 50 per cent tariff and
with the ongoing trade chaos, President Trump is using the livelihoods of Evraz
families as pawns in whatever bizarre game he's playing,” Kram said.
“I want to be clear on where Conservatives stand on this. We
strongly condemn President Trump’s latest unjust tariffs. These tariffs cannot
in any way be justified and are yet another betrayal by the President of the
long friendship between Canada and the United States.”
Kram noted that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has
called for retaliatory tariffs on imported American steel and aluminum.
“It is a tragedy that we are engaged in these sorts of
tit-for-tat retaliations with our biggest trading partner, but we did not start
this fight. We must be prepared to do everything to defend our Canadian
industries and jobs. The Trump administration must not be allowed to mistake
Canadian kindness for weakness,” Kram said.
“If the President applies further tariffs as he has
threatened, we will hit back on those as well. We will not falter in defence of
our country and these attacks will only harden our resolve.”
In addition to calling for retaliatory tariffs, Kram called
on the Liberal government to do three things to defend Canadian steel and
aluminum.
“First, we must listen to the leaders in our industry and
take additional action to combat illegal dumping and unfair trade practices by
China, a long-standing irritant.”
“Second, Mr. Carney must now abandon his plans to slap a
massive new industrial carbon tax on heavy industries. That would be like
slapping an additional tariff on ourselves. It’s time for Mr. Carney to take
off his ideological blinders and focus entirely on fighting the trade war.
"Third, the Liberal government must green-light
pipeline projects, which will provide steady employment for steel
workers."
Ultimately, Kram doubted whether the Liberals were fit to
carry out this trade war as it needs to be conducted.
“Only Canada First Conservatives will axe the taxes,
green-light pipelines made with Canadian steel and bring home production and
paycheques. We stand with the workers at Evraz, just as we always have.”
