Kram Launches "Kram the Food Bank" Charity Drive

Regina-Wascana's Michael Kram today issued a challenge to all other politicians, federal and provincial, of all political parties, as well as other community leaders and the general public, to join him in raising donations for the Regina Food Bank.

"Soaring inflation is making it harder and harder for Canadian families to make ends meet, which has led to increasing use of food banks. Food bank use in Saskatchewan is up 37% this year over last year. Food banks are telling us that they are no longer just serving the poorest of the poor. They are now seeing increasing numbers of working families who are struggling to pay the bills."

Kram emphasized that the campaign, and the issue, is non-partisan.

"Politicians of different stripes may disagree on a great many things, but the one thing we can all agree on is that no one in this city or this country should ever go hungry."

Kram stated that he hoped this campaign would build on the momentum of other campaigns.

"We have seen many campaigns, such as Mosaic's recent Million Meal Challenge, that have been successful in appealing to the general public, the business community and faith communities. Certainly, we want those audiences to contribute to our campaign as well. But the one audience that has not been reached before is the political community, who should be the most concerned and engaged with making positive change."

Kram will be appealing to all of his constituents as well as to all of his political supporters to make contributions to the campaign and is challenging his fellow politicians to do the same. To set the example, Kram will be making an undisclosed donation that Kram describes as "substantial."

"We don't want to turn this into a competition. Different people and organizations will be able to afford different amounts. We want everyone to be as generous as they can be within their means."

While Regina residents can make donations online and in-person at the food bank, Kram is also opening up his constituency office to receive donations.

"We are inviting everyone to come by our office at 2709 Quance Street to drop off hampers of non- perishable food items, cheques made out to the Regina Food Bank or sealed grocery gift cards. We look forward to making a massive delivery to the food bank in early December, in time for their Christmas rush."
