Media Statement by Michael Kram, MP on the Passing of Queen Elizabeth II

September 8, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Regina, SK- Michael Kram, Member of Parliament for Regina- Wascana, today responded to the news of the passing of Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada.

"Today we mourn the loss of our beloved monarch, Elizabeth II. She was, without a doubt, one of the most remarkable women of our time. So many aspects of her life came to define the way we see Britain, the Commonwealth and the world. She was a woman who, throughout her life, was utterly devoted to duty and service to others."

"During the Second World War, when she could have evacuated Britain, she chose to stay and serve her country as an army mechanic. Her wedding in many ways helped define the global reach of the new medium of television. She has overseen and, in many cases, engaged in all of the major events and turning points of the modern era. In terms of Canada alone, she has visited our country no fewer than 31 times and has been there to help us celebrate our new flag, our Centennial and our constitution. She has been a constant force for good in our lives."

"The role of the monarchy in Canada may only be symbolic, but Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II proved how very important symbols can be. She reigned for nearly half of Canada's existence as a country. Throughout that time, she provided a sense of stability and calm that helped to guide our nation. through many turbulent times. "Every year many Canadians, including myself, make a point of watching the Queen's Christmas message. She always left us feeling that, no matter how unsettled the rest of the world was, the Queen was still there for us so somehow it would all turn out OK. She was a surrogate mother to our nation and her passing will leave a hole in our hearts."

"I would like to close by extending my best wishes to our new monarch, the former Prince Charles, who I know, as a devoted son, will continually strive to preserve the legacy of his mother's wisdom and grace. Long live the King."
