Kram Launches ‘Wascana Cares’ Charity Campaign in Aid of Homelessness

Regina-Wascana MP Michael Kram today announced ‘Wascana Cares’, a charitable initiative in partnership with The Salvation Army aimed at providing support for the homeless.

“In a city as prosperous and caring as Regina, there is no excuse for the existence of homelessness on our streets. Rising food and housing prices have made times tough for all of us, but they are all the more so for our most vulnerable citizens. In this season of giving, it is vital that we provide support for those in need, Kram said.

Kram noted that point in time studies have shown that Regina’s homeless population has roughly doubled in the past five years.

“How can that be happening? It’s unacceptable and it’s high time we took action. It’s fine to sit back and expect the government to solve the problem, but, in the end, this is a problem where the whole community must get involved in finding solutions.”

Maj. Karen Hoeft of The Salvation Army welcomed the partnership. "The Salvation Army has a long-standing commitment to aiding those in need, and this partnership with MP Kram for Wascana Cares will amplify our efforts. We are excited to see the positive impact this initiative will have on our community."

While the campaign is focused primarily on raising money for The Salvation Army, Kram emphasized that there are many others worthy of support.

“This is a problem that requires all hands on deck – the private sector, the public sector and a variety of non-governmental organizations. Different cases may respond better to different approaches. Certainly, The Salvation Army has a long history and strong expertise, but I encourage everyone to make it a priority to donate to the homeless charity of their choice this Christmas.”

More information, including links for where to donate online, can be found on the campaign website at WascanaCares.ca.
