MP Kram Launches ‘Save RCMP Depot’
Campaign
Member of Parliament Michael Kram today launched a website
and online petition in support of RCMP Academy, Depot Division. Last week, the
Mass Casualty Commission investigating the 2020 Nova Scotia shootings
recommended that Depot be eliminated and replaced by a Canadian Police College
elsewhere in the country.
“There is no minimizing the 2020 Nova Scotia tragedy nor the
importance of the Mass Casualty Commission’s work. However, while the report
may have had some good recommendations, I would not be the first to observe
that its recommendation to close Depot was a significant over-reach,” Kram
said.
"I hate to talk in cliches but there are two that
perfectly describe this recommendation: Throwing the baby out with the
bathwater and reinventing the wheel. RCMP Depot in Regina is a world-class
police training facility. To dismantle it in order to build new facilities
somewhere else makes zero sense.
Although the recommendation has not yet become government
policy, Kram expressed concern that it would fit in with the federal Liberal
agenda.
"This recommendation is typical of the sort of
dismissive, heavy-handed approach of the Trudeau Liberals towards Western
Canada. They tried to attack our airports, our energy sector and our farmers.
This recommendation fits right in with their regional vendetta. But, as with
the air traffic control tower, the people of Regina have proven in the past
that, if we work together, we can block these harmful policies.”
Kram noted the broad consensus that was building in
opposition to the recommendation.
“Scott Moe opposes it. Carla Beck opposes it. My Regina
federal colleagues, Andrew Scheer and Warren Steinley oppose it. This is not a
left-wing or right-wing thing. It’s a Regina thing. This is a cause that all of
us in the city can and should get behind.”
