Carbon Tax "Bleeds Small Business Dry": MP Kram

Michael Kram, MP for Regina Wascana, today in Ottawa accused the Liberal government of "exploiting and suffocating" small business with its carbon tax policies.

Kram referenced a report released today by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business which showed that small businesses pay roughly 50 per cent of carbon taxes yet retuned next to nothing to them.

"This supposedly revenue-neutral tax is nothing of the sort. It has become a cash cow for the Liberals who are trying to bleed small businesses dry. When I was on the Industry and Technology Committee, a Liberal member of the committee explicitly said that the whole point of the tax was to inflict pain on small business," Kram said.

"Unlike big business, small businesses can't afford lobbyists, don't have access to carbon offsets, have less flexibility to reduce their energy use and don't have many friends in the Liberal caucus. They are easy targets for the Liberals' predatory taxation since they lack the clout to fight back."

By its own admission, the CFIB's numbers are only estimates since the Liberal government has never disclosed the effect of the carbon tax on small business. However, in a 2022 report, the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development noted: "In our view, due to the issues encountered in delivering the funding, the department had not addressed the burden from carbon pricing faced by small and medium-sized enterprises."

The CFIB's report further noted that the carbon tax has met with the most resistance in Saskatchewan and Alberta due to the tax's higher impact on the agriculture, resource, and export sectors.

"This is pure partisan wedge politics. The Liberals are intentionally pitting West against East for electoral advantage. Canada deserves an environmental policy, and a government, that unites us rather than divides us," Kram said.

Kram said that a Conservative government led by Pierre Poilievre would eliminate the carbon tax. In the meantime, Kram is calling on all Members of Parliament to support Conservative private member's Bill C- 234, which will immediately add exemptions to the carbon tax for certain farming activities.
